Thurrock has grown fast, and dog ownership has grown with it. Grays, Chafford Hundred, South Ockendon, Aveley, and Corringham all have plenty of dogs and not a huge amount of home boarding, which is why a lot of Thurrock owners end up looking just over the border into the Basildon area.

The A13 makes that a straightforward journey outside rush hour — usually 20 to 30 minutes.

Home Boarding, Kennels, and What Suits Your Dog

Thurrock has both traditional kennels and home boarders, and they are genuinely different products.

Home boarding puts your dog in a family home with a small number of other dogs. They sleep indoors, join daily walks, and keep something close to their normal routine. This suits the great majority of family dogs — dogs who live in houses, sleep on or near the sofa, and are used to human company most of the day.

Kennels give each dog an individual run and no contact with other dogs. That is the right answer for dogs who find other dogs stressful, dogs who guard food or toys, and dogs with medical needs requiring isolation.

Licensing: Which Council?

This trips people up in border areas. Any business boarding dogs in people's homes needs an animal activity licence under the 2018 regulations, issued by the council for the area where the business operates:

• Based in Grays, Chafford Hundred, South Ockendon, Aveley, Tilbury, or Corringham: licensed by Thurrock Council
• Based in Basildon, Laindon, Pitsea, Wickford, or Billericay: licensed by Basildon Borough Council

Whichever applies, ask to see the current licence and star rating. A licensed boarder will produce it without hesitation. An unlicensed one will usually explain why they do not need one, and that explanation is rarely correct.

Practical Things to Sort Before Booking

• Time the journey honestly. The A13 at 8am is a different road to the A13 at 10am. If you are considering regular daycare rather than occasional boarding, do the drive once at the time you would actually do it.
• See the home. A meet and greet should include the garden and where dogs sleep, not just the front room.
• Ask about numbers. How many dogs at a time, and how they are grouped and supervised.
• Check vaccinations, flea, and worming are current — see our vaccination checklist.
• Be honest about your dog. Reactivity, guarding, anxiety, and noise sensitivity are all manageable when known in advance and problematic when discovered mid-stay.
• Ask about updates. Daily photos are the norm with good home boarders.

Boarding, Daycare, or Both

Most Thurrock families we see use overnight boarding for holidays and occasional daycare either side, rather than daycare as a weekly fixture — the drive makes a daily commute less appealing than it is for Basildon locals. That said, one daycare day before a first boarding stay is genuinely worth the trip: it lets your dog experience the place and come home, which makes the first overnight far easier.

Thurrock owners have decent walking and a limited local boarding market, and the A13 opens up considerably more choice inland. Check which council licenses your boarder, see the home in person, do a trial day before the first overnight stay, and book school holidays and Christmas well ahead.
